I am dealing with a computer that has many software issues... but it just did something new. As it was posting it started beeping like a fire alarm or something. Could this possibly be an overheating warning sound? This sound was also acompanied by a flashing red light. We killed the power real quick, but the green power LED is still flashing... what the hell is going on!

was it a continuous beep or many short beeps?

if it IS heat, you should pull the power and let it cool off for a while before turning it on again.

How far does it get in the POST?

Each mobo has a bunch of beep codes that will tell you what is wrong...such as bad ram, cpu, video card, etc.

I had a K6-2 500 system that went into alarm like that when the CPU fan stopped working. The temps ran pretty high anyway and would occasionally go into alarm even with the fan working.

You didn't say what kind of board it was. Many boards do that when the cpu is too hot or a fan has failed...sometimes when settings have defaulted to a failsafe as well.
