I always thought it was a Hallmark Holiday. Some people I've talked to say it is a day for women to give a gift to their men. So instead of the guy taking the gal out (like on Valentine's Day), the gal is supposed to take the guy out.
 
A hallmark holiday created to stimulate the market during a time of seasonal business lull.
