I have this odd 1 cm X i cm window on my desktop that is white. Haven't a clue how it got there, however I can not remove it. I can move it around the desktop or hide behind the taskbar but I can not delete it. Inside the white square there is a repeating starburst pattern. It starts out as a single dot then expands out in a starburst. Repeats about every 5 seconds or so. Anyone have a clue to what this is and how to remove short of doing a reinstall or format /u?

Surely you've considered the possibility that this is malicious code (virus, worm, Trojan)? You ought to do some testing to find out what it is. Have you run at list two different brands of anti-virus software (with current updates) to see if this is malicious code? What OS are you running? Is this thing really a window (with a frame / title bar)? Describe it more precisely for us. If you're able to move it, is that done by placing the cursor over some part of it and dragging it, or by some other method (like with the keyboard)? If you're running Win9X or ME, look at your Close Programs list to see if there's a process listed there that you do not recognize. If you're running WinNT or W2K, look at your Task Manager to see if there's an unknown process listed. You might also want to check this URL to see if a search for the characteristics of this "window" turns up anything. Get back to us with your findings. Good luck.

Jim

I considered the possibility of a virus; however I did not want to go there, yet. I ran Mcafee. came up with nothing. Norton Antivirus locked up during the memory scan. Not certain what the ramifications of that is. Have not explored why norton locked up. This little window has an empty title bar when you click on it. Otherwise it simple demonstrates as a 1cm X 1cm white square on the desktop. I can drag it around with my mouse. I have look at all the usual places for startup programs. I have not recognized anything unusual. I'll get back with you when I'm sitting at the computer.

thanks

see what is running in the background and if you are using windows see what is in the startup folder. that might help you pinpoint what is going on.
