Yeah, but usually, comp geeks just call it DVI, where home theater geeks often refer to it as DVI-D.
Some of the new DVD players are outputting via this, with the claim that it does a better job than component video. It should, but I havent seen it for myself.

I have it on my video card, apparently...
I bought a DVI > VGA converter cable for a second monitor on my 9100 but it wouldnt fit, when i looked at the connecter on the cable, and the connector on the video card, the horizontal rectangle shaped pin is ever so slightly longer.

You mean digital. DVI-I can carry a digital DVI signal as well as a traditional VGA signal (You can buy a DVI-to-VGA dongle for a DVI-I port). DVI-D is digital-only. An HDTV-capable set with DVI will likely only have a DVI-D connector. Luckilly, with a DVI-D cable, you can plug it right in to any DVI-I video card and with a little configuration (Usually with Powerstrip) you can probably get output on your HDTV-capable set.

Vid cards and compy monitors often have this connector. I do not know if the standard is identical, but in DVD players, hooking up via this is fairly new.

I am not sure how they could exist. Given that the signal out from DVI is digital, and VGA is analog, how could this work?

Yah, and where is the DVI-D > VGA? Maybe its just my eyes but I only see DVI > VGA

Only thing is looking at that picture its the exact same connector as the one i had before.
Why cant companies keep connections standard ffs :|

Someone could make a "VGA box" like the S-Video "VGA Boxes" for game consoles, only this would be down-converting DVI-D and be a much more expensive device requiring some logic or dedicated microprocessors.

Havnt you seen the converters that are bundled with a lot of graphics cards these days? 😕
DVI-D to VGA costs some $200 for a convertor, IIRC (along the lines of this thing)
but most computer DVI ports have a DVI-I port, which means that the "+" shaped part of the DVI connector carries a UXGA (analog VGA) signal. the convertors in rudeguy's post simply connect the 5 connectors in the + section to their respective VGA plug pins.
DVI-D does not utilize the "+" shaped section, only utilizing the 24 pins arranged in a 8*3 rectangle for the digital signal. thus

mine doesnt have the cross thing on the side, only a line, it looks so similar to DVI-A whatever that is.

Jesus. This thread is way out of hand, for a simple question. DVI connections have integrated VGA. BUT DVI-D connections DO NOT HAVE ANALOG. This means that you cannot get a simple adapter. You have to get a device that encodes the signal as VGA.

Call these people and talk to someone in tech support, and tell them what you want to do.
