Actually, if you're getting CRC errors, then just throw clone cd at it and it'll make a perfect copy of the CD, no errors. :)

Works great for my self burned data cd's that get scratched or damaged. I just use clone cd to pull a clean copy then burn it.

Get the fscking stick out of your ass.

Yeah, he didn't know what CRC stood for, that's why the title of the thread says "cyclic redundancy check". I'm sure telling him the common acronym for that helped his understanding greatly

A lot of people don't know what CRC stands for but know what CRC errors are (from unzipping/unraring and the like).

it means that when the program was checking the integrity of the file it used the CRC algoritm and it failed the check. The file has been corrupted either through download or some other means.

Yeah - exactly what Ameesh said - usually with zip or rar spanning, you may come across those - but nowadays there are secondary programs out to check the downloaded files vs the original ones so that you dont have to waste your time figuring out what's messed up.

Try to clean your CD's first, a light scratch or a greasy smudge or fingerprint can cause that. Use mild soap plus warm water, wipe dry with lint-free cloth in circular motion from inside out. Helped me before.

And what a good thing it is too that he specified 'Cyclic Redundancy Check' and not simply 'CRC', or we could've taken it to mean any of the following:

Chemical Rubber Company
Control & Reporting Center
Calibration and Repair Center
Camera-Ready Copy
Camp Red Cloud
Canadian Research Chairs
Candida Related Complex
Capital Regional Command
Car Rental Center
Carriage Return Contact
Case Review Committee
Central Region Center
Central Region Chief
Central Reporting Center
Certification Review Committee
Certified Rehabilitation Counselor
Certified Retirement Counselor
Chesapeake Ranch Club
Chicago Rabbinical Council

Although, I'm not sure that any of these things could possibly relate to a problem dumping files from a CDR, but Feh.

:)

Can CRC errors be caused by bad data transfer from the hard drive to the CD burner? The CRC errors I am getting are when I try to retrieve archived data from cdrs (such as .doc or .mp3 files), not from rar or zip files. Perhaps its the super cheap cables I'm using???

More likely a scratch on your cd. It is able to view what is on the cd based on the context, but when it tries to pull said file, it fails miserably and returns CRC error. (my understanding at least). Basically, it isn't able to read the data to fully aquire the file. Sometimes very basic programs will ignore crc errors and manage to copy the files anyways -- but usually the file won't work. I am not sure whether cloneCD saves that like someone else said but cloneCD just does a very basic raw copy of the cd.
