I installed some new upgrades a few days ago (check out link for system specs), and everything went without a hitch. However, I was moving the computer upstairs to our spare bedroom, and I decided to rearrange the cables because they were completely blocking off one of the case fans. Well, I've had one problem after another when I decided to do this.
I first took out all of the power cables and IDE cables, and removed my motherboard from the case (I took out mb because I needed to add some screw holder dealies in the case). Then I put back all the cables and whatnot, taking care to tuck them in nicely and make sure they weren't in the way. This is when the troubles began. When I first turned on my computer, it posted, but it said there was a disk drive error. I noticed that the drive's access light was on permanently. Turns out I had plugged in the cable for it upside-down.
I fixed this, and then ran into another problem. When the BIOS was listing my IDE devices as the computer loaded, it showed that the primary devices were my cd-rw and dvd-rom. So, I switched the cd's IDE cables with my hard drives. Problem solved. I booted up again, and then, the BIOS showed that my (only) hard drive was listed as the primary slave. No problem, I just moved the IDE cable so that the last plug was the one my hard drive used. Problem solved. But there was one more problem, one which I still can't fix. I started up the computer (after solving all these little nuisances), and Windows loaded without problems. But, for some reason, now both my cd-rom drives don't show up at all. The little icon in my system tray that monitors my cd-rw drive shows that there are no cd-rw drives hooked up, neither cd drive shows up in My Computer, and neither shows up in the Device Manager. I must have turned the computer on and off and unplugged and replugged the cable for the cd-rom drives at least 5 times.
AND... now that I look in the device manager, I see theres the infamous exclamation point next to (not surprisingly) the "Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)." The properties say that "the device is not connected, not working properly, blah blah blah"
Can someone please help me? This isn't hampering my abilities to use the computer, but it won't let me use my cd-rom drives! and i want to play tribes 2! I dont think that its a bad cable, because it was working yesterday, and the bios detects the 2 drives, but its just windows thats wacky. what the hell is goin on?
