I thought this was supposed to be easy. It's a complete disaster. I need all the help I can get. I got my new mobo and case on Wednesday. Got it all hooked up, press the power button. Nothing, absoultly nothing, no fans, no nothing. So I now have my old systemwith out a mouse, the internals lying on a bunch of boxes in front of my feet which seems to boot 1/10 times. But the old system is using the new case/power so I know there's nothing wrong there. From what I can figure out it's either
A) Bad mobo
or
B) maybe something to do with the Ram, it says only unbuffered i have no idea. It fits fine and looks like everything works well so i don't think it's the ram.

Its the Tyan Trinity 400 Revision E.
Using P2 350
64 MB
Plan Jane Video Card
Some HDD
No clue what to do, please help!
I;ll be happy if it only POST's!!!

Take a deep breath...

I know the feeling. Have you gotten down to the lowest possible configuration? First, make sure that your motherboard isn't shorting out by touching a post or anything on the tray. Don't plug in any drives, cards or anything. With just the CPU and RAM in, make sure your power cables are all connected. Make sure that the lead from the soft power switch on the front are running to the correct pins. If nothing else, the fans should kick in. Even when I've had dead motherboards in the past, the fans would turn on.

Let us start with the basics: is it plugged in? Is the powersupply turned on-if it has a rocker switch make sure it is "on". If yes to both then turn off PS and make sure everything is well seated.

There nothing wrong with the power supply it works fine in my old system. I have ONLY CPu, Ram and the ATX power connector and the Soft-power jumper plugged in. And i still get zip. I've made sure the cpu and ram are seated so many times I've lost count.

Ok-did you set your soft-power switch by the manual or by the MB? On my 400 they are not the same-inverted?

might wanna put vid card in... well, w/ my bx6-2 i had before, i didn't turn on.. and after pulling everything apart, i found it to be i knocked the video card slightly out of the agp slot. Re-seat everything securely.

Um.. again, double check shorts, make sure you connected the power switch to the right jumpers (may sound silly, but you can sometimes mistake a couple of pins).

Wait, is this an AT or ATX?

Double check your led connections with the manual.Try the ram from your old system,if it works in the new one.Borrow a stick from somebody.

Check and make sure the mobo is not grounding out on the case....this would make it appear to be "dead" if that was happening

This is gonna sound stupid, but it happened to me.

Make sure your processor is pushed all the way down in the slot.

I pushed mine in once, enough to snap the locks, and it wouldn't budge any further so I thought it was in. No boot up. I was freakin out. I had my friend come over, he gave it a harder push and then *snap* it went all the way in. Booted up fine.

I know, really dumb.

The way I test for a possible dead motherboard is to have only the power supply, on-off switch and the processor plugged into the motherboard. When you turn on the power the fans should come on and you should get a series of POST beeps since there's no RAM in the board. If neither happens, and you know the power supply is good, then either the motherboard or the processor is bad.

This assumes you already made sure nothing is grounding out the motherboard. As far as I know there's no way to tell whether it's the processor or motherboard that's bad short of trying the processor in another system.

CAUTION: Amateur offering advice!!!!

So now that I've given the above warning, I'll put in my own 2 cents.

Just to double check....

1. New PS (and case). They work fine with old board.

2. New board plugged in to power supply, soft power-on connector plugged in and.....

NOTHING! no beep codes, no partial spin up of drive, NADA!

3. Is the CMOS jumper set in the clear position? What about all the other jumpers? Go through and check to see if they are
all set to factory spec. That is, except for the CPU voltage
and frequency multipliers. They should be set to match your
PII. (Your board may do some of this automatically.)

4. Did you plug in LED in addition to the power on connector?
If so, you should be able to see the light come on, or I
would guess that the PS is shorted. Are the connectors on
the right leads on the board. (I always seem to screw this up.)

5. Still nothing?! Just for the hell of it, pull out the RAM and CPU. The LED should at least come on. (This really shouldn't
make a difference, but heh...you're desparate if you're
listening to me.)

6. What about the obvious--are there any cracks in the MB, any broken circuit paths (what the H do call those again???) or splats of solder?

7. Besides the CPU and simms, check the BIOS and other chips for loose connections.

8. Still nothing?! Now this next part is a little tricky... Carefully all the leads and remove the CPU and memory. Place the motherboard on a flat hard surface. Now take a shovel-it should have wooden handle--because those fiberglass ones
can build up a lot of static electricity. Now beat the hell
that junk motherboard! You'll feel better.

P.S. There may be some warranty problems if that last step is followed.

put the mobo on the padding that came in the box. (outside the case)

plug the cup, ram, video and power supply in.

See if it boots.

If it does, jonnyGuru loves you. ;)

It not shorting out. Its on a cardboard box that it came with. I have no idea whats wrong, anybody else have the Trinity 400, I heard somebody say their Trinity jumpers were different than in the manual. Hmm...

take it to a shop that has the resources to test the components and narrow it down. You have too many variables. It could be Power supply,or could be voltage detectors/splitters on the mobo.It could be a dead Mobo.It could be bables installed backwards for your floppy or hdd or cdrom. You need all that checked. And you need another mobo(any mobo) to isolate the power supply from the scenerio.IMHO

More than likely, you have the cable from the power button on the case connected to the wrong pins on the motherboard. When that happens, pushing the button will do nothing, not even turn on the fans, since your motherboard is not sending the 'signal' to the ATX power supply to turn things on. Disconnect everything but the CPU and memory, and the one power button connector cable in, and see what happens. If that starts things up, you can add one thing at a time to make sure everything's ok.

Good luck!

Heh, tagej beat me too it. I was setting up a computer for a friend and could not get the thing to respond at all. I must have done everything (including plugging in the motherboard while not attached to the case to get rid of the short aspect). Turns out the manual had the pinout for the wires upside down. I was so mad. But, the system is working fine now ;)
