What the hell happened to the tweeters on my tower speakers?

I've got two Polk RTi150 tower speakers. I got them from Crutchfield several years ago. I really haven't used them in a few years either. I left them at home while I was away at college + grad school, so they went unused for about 5 years minus some usage during the summers and winters.
I was thinking about selling them, and today I took the covers off of them and noticed that the tweeters look all %@*^ed up on both of them! This is obviously what they should look like.

I know they weren't like this when I got them! The towers have been in the same spot since I installed them. I don't have any siblings and I know my parents haven't touched them. The speakers sound OK for the most part, but every now and then I can hear a very very faint pop/crackling sound. Can I do anything to fix the tweeters (fairly cheaply)?

I should have known. Duct tape (and beer) are the solution to all problems.

Thanks

Wow, I burned an MP3 CD and played through some songs.. man I forgot how loud and clear this system is. I don't think I want to sell them now!

hopefully the tweeter isn't itself perforated. Good luck!

The duct tape got them back to the dome shape. I still have no idea how they got like that.

And I feel kind of stupid to admit this, but the occasional popping/cracking noise was likely just because I was only listening to FM radio. My CDs sound crisp and clear.

Just think, those are MP3s. Imagine CD quality, or even DVD-A, or SACD.

My equipment is from around the year 2000 - I was surprised to see that my DVD changer supports MP3 CDs! No DVD-A or SACD support on it.

I'm thinking about getting this and some sort of HD DVD and/or Blu-ray player.
Or maybe just some other receiver with a separate HD Radio tuner (like the Sangean HDT-1).

Wow, that receiver has no digital inputs.... (that I could make out)
There is a few Onkyos that support XM radio.
Remember, "HD" radio is a subscriber service, meaning it costs money each month. (you probably knew that however)
What receiver do you have currently?

Oh, I didn't notice the lack of digital inputs... didn't really look at more than search results. I do want something with HDMI switching. That's why I'm also considering other receivers plus a separate HD radio tuner.

I think you've got things mixed up on HD radio, though. Unlike XM and Sirius, there are no monthly subscriber fees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_Radio "Like traditional AM and FM stations, HD Radio programming is free, but a new radio is required."

Right now I have a Sony STR-DE945 Text

Your speakers appear to have succumbed to one of the dealiest forces a stereo or home theater ever has to face. It's worse than power surges.

The look to have fallen to the deadly 6 year old kid.

That's what it looks like, but there have been no kids in this house. Ever.
