I agree... that whole 64-bit thing geared for desktop users is not going to get them very far. Intel was right saying there's really no use for it on workstations/desktops. They need a new strategy, fast.

<-- AMD T-bird user.

I thought AMD just announced below predicted earnings and massive layoffs (heard it on the radio yesterday) that might have something to do with it.

If a stock isn't worth what it's trading at, what's it worth??? :Q As for the volitility issue, that's due to all the factors that drive the market. Emotion drives the market more than logic. An issues worth is what the market is willing to buy/sell it for. Logic(valuation) and emotion(opinion) both drive current price. Also weigh in factors such as risk. All these considerations drive stock price. If AMD is at $3.80, it's there because that's what it's worth even though some say it's worth $1 and others $10.

Pets.com. See note about emotion.
Go look up KIM to see a low volatility issue. See note about valuation.
Pets.com at $1 Billion is an example of risk tolerance.
KIM or Coke are examples of risk aversion.
Contrary to what others here might say, AMD might be going the way of the dinasaur. The economy might save them, but there is a reason they are at $3 and some change.

The reason is people are on the bandwagon. Little people with not much money are being coaxed to sell by the institutions that want more. AMD is a great short term play right now and an even better long term.
Consider the concepts of valuation, risk and emotion. Emotion is what is making you say this. If insitutions were buying right now, wouldn't that cause AMD to go up, especially if people think it's worth more than $4??? To the risk tolerant investor, AMD may very well be a great play right now. The market would seem to disagree.
AMD is not going the way of the 'dinasaur'. Someone will want to buy it out with a market cap that gets much lower. (Maybe the Chinese government.)

Not worth discussing speculation.

a short squeeze should bring it up in the shorterm but longterm prospects are grim. hard to compete against an 800lb gorilla. they're holding onto market share but sacrificing ASP's so they'll need to chop heads or charge more. and that col. jerry sanders guy gets paid too much.

"polaroid wont go under, they're a big brand, too popular"
"kmart wont go under, they're a big brand, too popular"
"xerox wont go under, they're a big brand, too popular"
"worldcom wont go under, they're a big brand, too popular"

i hope AMD wont come that close, but they are burning cash way too fast.

From what I understand, they realized that the market was flooded and their inventory was getting pretty big so they decided to clean out their inventory this past quarter. The K8 core is expected to come out early 1Q of 03 and they are probably getting ready for the big change. I'd say to wait and see if they fall to $3.00. If they are steady around 3 for awhile, then I would jump in because they will probably start kicking it into high gear soon. It has alot to do with the economy as well and if computer sales start increasing, then expect big things.

Seems like AMD would be a likely takeover target if this trend continues.

Does nVidia want to get in the CPU business? How about Microsoft?
