What the hell do I do with old computer hardware?

Old video cards, hard drives, modems, motherboards... I'm pretty sure there *has* to be a better way to dispose of these than tossin' them in the trash. Anyone know of a service that collects them and does useful/responsible things with them, etc.?

Dell had a "computer parts dropoff" day last year in the Denver area where they collected ten tons of parts for free. The best I can tell you is wait for one of those in your area, unless you can find a charity or something to donate the parts to.

I'd try to cobble together usable systems and then donate them to nonprofit or public service organizations.

Definitely. Fun and rewarding. 🙂

If you really want cash for them, though, why not try FS/FT here? And then eBay the stuff if that doesn't work. There's so much you can do with such a wide array of parts.

1) Donate it and write it off.
2) Put Linux on it.
3) Sell on EBay (sometimes people need older parts for whatever reason).
4) Turn it into abstract art and decorate your computer room with it.

I've thought of eBay or donating the parts, but a few items (namely some old, smoldering hard drives) just plain don't work. Are these safe to throw out? (I ask because I thought some components had less than environmentally friendly origins.)

The ones here won't take computer stuff anymore...unless, of course, you leave it in front of their door in the middle of the night 😉

Give them to thoes charities that take old computer stuff for disadvantages families.

About your harddrives - open them up and pluck out the magnets. They're SO MUCH FUN to play with and make AMAZING refridgerator magnets. The metal parts can be used as a candy dish if you can get out the platters and such. Then you may want to eradicate the platters, or you can just throw them away.

I've got old HW crap lying around the company that I don't even know what it is, that probably could not even be sold for $1 on ebay... I'd say donate to a school or something if it's as crappy as the stuff I have...
