Sending your toddler off to be a tool of the state is quite another.
If you lived in near poverty with no options and you see your kid wanting for everything with almost no great future and somebody says, and can actually deliver, the possibility of your child having a successful life with more opportunity and luxuries and security, don't you think you'd consider it?

congenitally absent adult teeth aren't that uncommon, but usually it involves a bicuspid.

Parents sending their kids to better their own life happens everywhere. Comparing the US and Chinese gov't is irrelevant.

Sending your kid off to college is one thing. Sending your toddler off to be a tool of the state is quite another.

you ever hear about boarding school?

Are kids 2 years old when they are sent off to boarding school?

maybe 6? regardless, it was a point to refute your idea that in the Western world, parents only send their kids away for college.

OK, so I was watching women's gymnastics tonight, and the announcers were talking about the 20 year old team captain for china...this is what one of the announcers said:

"She was taken away from her family at 3, and put into the olympic program. She would get to talk to her family maybe once per year. One day she called her family and said she wanted to go home. Her family knew what it would do for their status having her compete, so they told her 'no you can't come home'.

I mean seriously, wtf is wrong with this country? Talk about an inferiority complex. They take these kids away from their families when the kids are as young as 3, and then stick them in these olympic-factory programs...I thought I'd have a hard time being more disgusted with this country, but that anecdote about their gymnastics team captain actually lowered my respect for their country even more. What a bunch of heathens.

You made a thread based on what you just heard last night? I don't think you should march in here on your high horse being a moral champion unless you know how poverty feels like.

uuhh...I was talking about selfish parents who want to better their lives by using their kids not bettering the kids life.

You dont think the lives of these girls will be improved? They'll receive perks after retirement, a solid education, probably be set up with good government housing. Sounds pretty good compared to some of the conditions they're coming from.

Initially I'm a bit torn when I think these girls are basically conditioned to be robots and do one thing in life, it's extremely difficult to root for a country winning gold if that's how they're going about it--but what's the alternative?

Having been in Vietnam and seeing what rural life is, being an olympic gymnast and honoring your country--regardless of what sort of torture you have to go through as a youth--is infinitely better than a life you'd achieve living on a farm picking rice for 16 hours a day, never knowing where/when your next meal is coming.

There is honor in what they do, and in their minds their lives are immeasurably more meaningful as a result. It's a cultural difference that may be hard to gasp as we sit away in comfy chairs behind our computers snacking away knowing when our next paycheck is coming--but until you've witnessed, or better yet lived in true poverty (not the kind where you still have a house and just have lots of credit card debt), but poverty in the extreme sense, I don't think it's right to judge what these families have had to go through and the scenario works.

Can we open a dedicated thread where the members who hate any positive news about China can post their grievances? It would be awesome of we can get all the douchebags collected in one area.

how is this POSITIVE...the government takes their children regardless of what the family thinks, and they rarely/never see them again. I'm sure SOME families and SOME children enjoy the benefits of being in the program...but even if they hated it, they have no choice. That's not freedom, that's oppression.

You don't know sh!t my friend. Unfortunately most of China is still too poor to post a reply in their own defense. Enjoy your temporal luxuries and find something more worthwhile to bitch about.

Most of China is still too poor or can they not reply because their internet has been censored?

win.

Fail.

Anandtech is not censored.

Well they did win.

And shinerburke, while I agree that most of them look young, that picture is fucking horrible quality so it defeats itself.

It's pretty well accepted that the Chinese government did supply fact birth certificates. This aren't wild accusations, but quite a bit of evidence to back the claims. It just can't be proven 100%

It's possible that I am not understanding your point, but I am fairly certain that no birth certificates were presented.

The drive to attain perfect gymnasts borders on inhumane. There are talks of sexual abuse, stunted growth, and thousands of broken girls. One girl couldn't even menstruate properly until she was 20. While what you see on TV is beautiful, there are thousands of girls that were thrown away and had their childhoods stolen from them for each one that you see.
