What the heck is this

So I have this IBM laptop drive I want to put in a SFF, but it doesnt have a regular ATAPI connection (for which I have an ATAPI->IDE adapter). Apparently some have have adapters built in that change from ATAPI->propriatary and you can just remove the adapter, not with this one it seems, or at least not that I can see.

Anyone know what I need to make this work, other than a prayer and a new drive?

First pic is CDrom (bottom) and the regular ATAPI->IDE adapter (top)
Second is the CDrom connection from the back (inside)
3rd and 4th are just serial/model numbers if it helps someone track this down

Sorry for the piss poor pics, all I have is a webcam.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Sadly that would be far too easy. That is what I have (the top connector you see in pic 1) it's a standard ATAPI->IDE adapter. As you can see, those two adapters in the picture dont go together, I need to figuire out how to make that happen.

Thanks for the link tho...the search continues

Well, your pictures are not all that clear. It would probably be a lot easier to just get a slim optical drive and not worry about adapting what you have to something else.

Yeah, I know the pictures suck about as much as the could. I tried, really I did.

Sadly I cant really afford another drive. I have what I have and that's pretty much what I have. I would love to try to find a solution to this drive if I can.

Thanks for the suggestions tho, much appreciated

What I think you want is something like this - less than $10 a pop at any electronics shop.

2.3-3.5

I've not seen it at 'any electronics shop'... In fact, you usually have to go to a specialty shop to get one, or a place that sells to people that need such items. I seriously doubt radio shack is going to carry that item. An electronics superstore, or store that sells computer repair parts could have them. Personally, I get mine from a distributor that stocks them... Makes it easier for me to find, and a lot cheaper (I get them for under $5 each)...

I looked at those, but again, no go. Those are for HDD and this is for a CDROM. what I have (and need) is sort of like in what Akira34 linked in the first reply, but with a special IBM adapter on then end.

thanks for the link tho

Since it looks like the drive has a completely proprietary connection (not good, since I've looked at a few other slim optical drives and the ALL use the same connection to the drive itself) it looks like you're 100% boned. If that's just a cd-rom, you can get one for under $50 (with the 40 pin IDE adapter). Check out caseoutlet for the drives...

Yeah, looking for a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, so looking at at least USD$80+ship to canada so it's not cheap 🙂

Thanks for looking tho, I appreciate it

IBM uses proprietary connectors on different models. Ex. R40 and R51 drives are not interchangable (tried just to check today). Your basically screwed my friend =/
