question as per subject line. I've been seeing a lot of this term being used in Anandtech lately.. and I am just wondering what the heck people are talking about.

As deftron's dictionary stated ;
"To post with the sole intention of increasing post count or to
post something with no relevance or substance"

You are not your job.
You are not how much you have in the bank.
You are not the contents of your wallet.
You are not your frikkin khakis.
You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.
What happens first is you can't sleep.
What happens then is there's a gun in your mouth.
And what happens next is you meet Nef.
Let me tell you about Nef.
He had a plan.
In Nef we trusted.
Nef says the things you own, end up owning you.
It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.
Nef represents that kind of freedom.
First rule of Nefing: You do not talk about Nefing.
Second rule of Nefing: You do not talk about Nefing.
Mods say Nefing might be the answer.
But NEF THIS!

so everyone nefs everytime they post correct?

well some would argue :p

i don't think so though, while every post has the side effect of increasing post count, i don't think everybody posts with the purpose of raising their post count (at least i hope not).

I don't want to be accused of neffing but it stands for posting pointless posts strickly for the sole purpose of raising your post count. Yes posting adds to it but when you have a lot of useless posts it's considered neffing.

I slightly remember a post about this a while back that said that neffing is a reference to a member/former member(I don't remember which) with the name nef that would post uselessly to increase his number of posts.
Although I don't see how it really matters apparently it does to some people. Don't get me wrong, I am proud of the number of posts i have I try my darnest not to make completely useless posts or restate a point that has already been made on a thread.

Ok, here's the straight poop:

Once upon a time there was a member named Nef.

He posted over and over and over (erroneous threads and replies) to raise his post count. Obviously, he was subsequently (and very quickly) banned.
For some reason we have chosen to forever honor his infamy by coining the phrase "to nef," which is posting a thread or reply with absolutely no point or intrinsic value whatsoever, whether to increase one's post count or to attract attention (more common).

An example nef thread would be something like, "I like eggs" or "Where are my pants?"
An example of a nef reply would be ":p" or "I don't know."
