What the heck are they playing at in the Senate now?

Who is caving here?

WASHINGTON — The Senate will vote Thursday on two separate bills that would bring an immediate end to the partial government shutdown: one backed by President Trump that includes $5.7 billion for his border wall and another that would simply extend funding for shuttered agencies through Feb. 8.

The plan, a compromise between Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, and Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, offers the first hint of a path out of the partial shutdown, which is now in its fifth week and has left 800,000 federal workers without pay. The two announced it Tuesday afternoon on the Senate floor.

”People are saying isn’t there a way out of this mess, isn’t there a way to relieve the burden on the 800,000 federal workers not getting paid, isn’t there a way to get government services open first and debate what we should do for border security later?” Mr. Schumer said. “Well, now there’s a way.”

It looks like Schumer caved to get funding until Feb 8th?

Am I reading that wrong?

February 8th, two weeks? What good is that going to accomplish besides having just enough time to backprocess missed paychecks before going into another shutdown? Or is that precisely the plan to mitigate shutdown damage from all the people angry about no pay?

McConnell is trying to show that neither side's ideas can pass.
So...what changed from when the Senate passed a CR bill 100-0 to now? I want to know which Republicans have changed their mind and decided the shutdown was a good thing all along. Only reason to vote against is if you think 2/8 doesn't buy enough time.

McConnell blocked DHS funding again. I think it's kind of stupid of the GOP, because the biggest risk to their shutdown plan is TSA workers calling in sick en mass and shutting down air travel. Then sh!t will hit the fan very quickly. I don't know why Democrats are giving GOP the opportunity to fund DHS without reopening the whole government, but GOP is stupid enough to reject it.

You're reading it wrong. There are two separate bills, one to fund the govt & the other for wall money. If anybody is caving, it's McConnell. Trump tied those things together & Mitch is separating them.

Ok there are three permutations here.

One is that the 5.7 billion wall bill is passed. Trump gets his money. The govt funding bill passes. Trump may allow the government to open for a couple weeks and give his SOTU speech, or he takes his money and keeps the govt shut.

Or the wall doesn't pass but the funding does. Trump will veto.

Any way I look at this Trump wins, at worst for him is status quo, Dems lose as they cave on the wall to get a couple weeks then back to blackmail.

You're forgetting Pelosi and the House. No way I think she gives Trump a win.

Yes, you’re thinking the opposite. This is McConnell caving as the Democrats’ position has always been that we reopen the government and then address border security. McConnell offering up a CR to do that is him giving the Democrats exactly what they want.

The most likely outcome here though is that neither measure passes and so we don’t really go anywhere. Still, this is a good sign as it’s nothing but concessions from Republicans and zero concessions from Democrats.

That's true, so is this MItch throwing Donnie under the bus? I didn't have my caffeine today. 😉

I think in the ends it’s probably a little bit of that but really I suspect neither will pass so it kind of doesn’t matter.

Still, before McConnell was refusing to bring any CR to the floor and now he’s not.

OK I follow. Good thing DACA can't be used as part of the blackmail anymore.

We'll see what happens. If only Trump spent less time reading Mein Kampf and more time reading Sun Tzu, he would know that:
"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."

Do any of those come in 1-page versions?

I don't think people realize that the US Government is about 2 weeks away from complete collapse. Federal workers are about to miss their second consecutive paycheck, meaning they will have gone a month without pay.

I work for a federal agency and my agency has recalled most of our workers, but only 43% of those recalled has reported, and that number is falling about about 3% per day. I expect that it will fall sharply after we miss the next paycheck tomorrow. At this rate we will be unable to continue all of even our most critical functions by the end of next week.

Republicans are waiting for a plane crash before they feel the need to act...and then they will proclaim themselves heros for ending the shutdown [they started.]
