Hi,

Iam happy workin with my box doin' the usual, surfing downloading -the works. Before i go to work i thought i defragment my c:. Well win2k refused to do so and i thought a restart
would do the trick (it had been on for 7 days).
NO WAY!
After the restart i could'nt get back on the desktop, windows complaining about the registry hive "software" being corrupt.
Everything i tried failed (ofcourse i didn't make any backups or had an emergency repair disk handy) and i had to reinstall again.
Have you got any idea what might have caused this? The box is usually on 5-6 days on a row
and it's very stable. I did not do any installs/upgrades prior to this crash.
when i checked, the software hive was 0 in the old winnt directory.

My box:

asus a7v bos:1006
athlon thunderbird 700@800
crucial cas2 384mb
asus geforce 256ddr
ibm 75gxp 45 gb(according to the ibm tool healthy)

hmm, perhaps it could have been a virus but we'll never know now since you've reinstalled.:frown:

Many problems have been reported with ACPI and Registry hive corruption.. Many.
It could very well contiune to happen unless you disable ACPI in the BIOS.

Now this is strange...? I had a problem yesterday... I did a simple memory check (switched out a couple of 256meg modules even adjusted the memory timings to test with and no crashes either). Anyhow I rebooted with my reg memory (Infineon) at the reg speed as before and poof!!! Got into WinME and no mouse and no video drivers (Radeon). WTF!!! was my first reaction??? Went into safe mode and had mouse and said I had a Radeon DDR so I tried several times to get back into ME same thing over and over... When I tried a restore boom a kernal32.dll error no go no matter what so... copy all my crap to a lower drive (BTW I have 45gig 75GXP also) and reinstall and back to where I was within 1 hour...

Now I remember something about these IBM drives and shuting down WinXX and problems with not saving all the info does anyone remember this??? Or are am I haveing those little people popping up beside my head wispering crap in my ear???

Ahhh... I read rbV5`s thread and this did come up... what is the cure???
