So I finally got my stuff from intel and I oredered up some memory from googlegear, PC3200 (aka ddr400), corsair 512MB cas2. I install all the hardware and go to turn it on and I get three beeps. So I recheck all my connections and make sure the memory is reseated. I reboot and I don't get any beeps but I don't get anything else either:( So I'm thinking maybe it's just a power issue intel recomends at least a 250w and I have a 300w p4 ps. So I remove as much uneeded drives and cards as possible and try to reboot. Now I get the beep codes again, so I recheck everything again and reboot, no beep codes but nothing else either:|

What is going on? I've replaced the video card (gefroce 3) with soemthing weaker (power wise) a geforce ddr and I still get nothing.

And unfortunately I don't have another stick of memory laying around to see if it is indeed the $180 stick of memory I just bought.

Any ideas?

What brand and model of 300W PSU? If it's a generic one, splurge and get a brand-name one like an Antec TruePower 330, Sparkle Power 350, Enermax 365... those generic ones are almost always running inflated ratings.

Also, have you got the auxiliary power plug connected, the square 4-pin one with two black and two yellow wires? If not, you would want to hook that up.

I do have the P4 connector connected and I eventually I will invest a much better ps but in the mean time the thing should at least boot. If the ps was weak I would be able to atleast boot, and if it was stressing the ps then it would either randomly reboot or give some major stability problems.

Ok, try this: extract the mobo from the case and lay it out on cardboard or something. Try running it outside the case like that, using a screwdriver tip to trip the power pins on the board. Push down really hard on your video card and rock it front to rear to make sure it's all the way down past the second set of contacts in the AGP slot, and eyeball the RAM where it meets the socket to ensure it is truly all the way into the slot.

What is the combined output listed on your PSU label for 3.3V + 5V, just out of curiosity? And what is its total 12-volt amperage rating?

3.3V + 5V= 175w
3.3V + 5V+12v=280w

On a side note:
If you want to teach me what exactly I'm looking at and how to interpret it that would be great (especailly for when I do go looking for ps's).

OK, some motherboards set 'BY SPD' (Iniital boot) value to CAS 3. This memory will NOT work.

I had this problem on a 4GEA+. Try with a PC2100 stick (Crucial from Best Buy for example) and once it boots set the memory timings manually (CAS 2).

Report back what you find. Anything in the manual that tells you what the three beeps mean?

Thanks, Sri

With PSUs, I mostly focus on encouraging people to pick a high-quality brand (Enermax, Antec, Sparkle Power are proven ones among the Forum users) and maybe going a little higher than what you think is needed. For the demanding systems we've got these days, where the CPUs alone can sustain over 60W-70W draw and top-end video cards draw enough power to need separate power plugs (Radeon 9700 Pro), it seems good to get the "towing package" and have surplus power for the future.

Antec is probably my favorite, and has a 3-year warranty that you could actually count on them backing it up. Their TruePower units have fully-independent 3.3V and 5V lines, making their 330W TruePower about as strong as their previous 400W PP403X unit. Not only that, but you can get them from Staples and look around for someplace to get a $20-off-$50 coupon. Look around for sites that might have *ahem* shopping codes...? Ah so... :D

Ok just an update for all those that care.

It turns out there is some compatibility issues with the d845pebt2 and corsair xms 3200 memory. If anyone bought this memory corsair will replace it with a newer revision that will solve the problem.

For a temporary fix this is what I did;

With the memory in dimm0 I set the mobo jumers to configure and set the timing to how they should be, I then powered off and removed the memory and placed it in dimm1 and reset the jumper to nromal. I rebooted and I got some sort of error message which I just ignored and went into the bios. I rechecked all my settings and rebooted and now it works.

Well, obviously he does now huh... He found the problem, worked around it, and is now running. Not bad I say ;)
