People are getting more and more of the mind set that nothing at all should ever inconvenience them and then harming others.

I deal with this almost weekly walking my dogs (cattle dog and a golden ret/corgi mix)...people blowing a stop sign while I am in the middle of the road crossing, passing on the oncoming lane; soccer moms blowing by with us in a school crosswalk, and worse people actually coming up on the swales to try and scare? us.

fuck them. IMHO this guy below should rot in jail for the rest of his life for what he did.

Arrest made in cattle drive hit-and-run that severed dog's leg
By Ashley Gebb

A man was arrested in connection with a cattle drive hit-and-run, the Sierra County Sheriff's Department said Saturday.

Justin Phillip Lombardobarton, 19, of Camptonville (Yuba County), was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and animal cruelty for allegedly striking five cows, running over a cattle dog named Maggie and threatening to hit several horseback riders as he plowed through the livestock on June 19.

The horseback riders were participating in the annual Reader Ranch Cattle Drive near the town of Pike, in the Sierra foothills about 15 miles north of Nevada City. The drive to the herd's summer pasture follows a rural road before dropping onto a trail.

Participants in the cattle drive and ranch owner John Reader described the attack to The Union newspaper in Grass Valley. A man in a white Jeep Cherokee drove past the cattle, stopped in the middle of the herd and then whipped his steering wheel to the right and gunned it, Reader told The Union.

When riders tried to cut the driver off, he aimed toward them and then twice drove over Maggie, the ranch owner's best cattle dog, who was trotting behind the cows.

Maggie sustained a severed leg and internal injuries, with vet bills totaling $9,000. Reader was unsure about injuries to the cattle, which dispersed in the high country, but he told The Union they may have internal injuries.

The incident was investigated by the California Highway

Patrol out of Grass Valley. When investigators determined the attack was deliberate, the Sierra County Sheriff's Department took over and used interviews with people in Alleghany, Pike, Camptonville, North San Juan and Nevada City. Deputies arrested Lombardobarton at 11:30 p.m. Friday on Highway 49 near Camptonville, which is a few miles west of Pike.

Lombardobarton was booked into Sierra County Jail in Downieville. Bail was set at $100,000. Additional charges may follow.

I feel bad for the dog but ranchers need to keep their damn livestock out of the road. Open range laws kill.

You fail.

1. In open range, the duty of care lies with the driver. If you're in open range (it's always posted) and don't give yourself enough time, that's your fault.

2. There's a big difference between general open range and ranchers actively driving cattle from one field to the next. This reads like a case of some dipshit driving up behind and either not giving the ranchers enough time to split the herd for him to go through or just being a complete doucheweasel and thinking it would be "fun" to kill some cows.

I'm well aware of what open range laws are. They are liability subsidies for ranchers. Anyone one else being as negligent as to intentionally leave their personal property in the public roadways causing an accident would be sued into the dirt and likely be found criminally negligent as well. Open range laws create a special class of citizens (ranchers) who can't be held accountable for their actions.

The OP's story is the rancher's version of what happened. We'll have to wait and see what the court finds.

Location x3. Living in the east coast for 4 years people were rude bastards. In the midwest, generally people are much nicer. Granted, there are exceptions but this is one of the main reasons we moved back. Since using a cane for about a month, it amazed me how much nicer people are, in general.

I can always tell when dealing with someone from chicago. the people who live around here are laid back and polite. if you help them you would be amazed at how many will help you if needed.

Ok, so when did open range replace free range?

Before I broke my leg I would go walking or biking for several hours every day and had a close call almost every time. People would drive onto oncomming traffic while texting, nearly brushed by me with their car while I was biking even though I was so close to the curb that I was in the cemented part, not the asphalt. They even almost ran me over - on the sidewalk!

edit: I would joke with my parents that if they didnt hear from me again that Ive probably been run over!

umm they said it was a deliberate act in what I posted.

You are more a boy than a man no matter how 'hard' you think you are.

You fucking realize this was an annual event right and not just a random run?

/fail

$100,000 bail makes the Judge believe the Ranchers and Police are correct in their reporting of the incident.

Someone should run over the asshat driver a couple of times.

This is why cowboys are supposed to carry guns. Run over my dog twice? Threaten to run over myself and my friends while we're on horseback? You're done. 45-70 through your drivers side window.

I'm ok with people doing crap like that, such as I try and not get annoyed when a tractor is doing 15 mph in front of me, but only if there is a reason. If somebody in front of me is doing 40 in a 50 and I cannot pass I rage!!!!

Ya, major location based thing. City folk are assholes. Country folk have less assholes. I've done a LOT of driving in the country and through small towns, and I don't think I've ever been honked at once out there. You can always tell who the cottagers are though...

In my experience city drivers are assholes, but country drivers are just incompetent. A gross oversimplification of course, but that's just what I observe.

It's part of the growing sense of entitlement in this country, I think.

In ten years when you are old enough to drive I hope that changes.
