What the different between northbridge chipset & southbridge chipset ?

What the different between northbridge chipset & southbridge chipset ?

the whole unit is called the chipset

i cant remember exactly but i know the northbridge connects things like cpu/ram

and the southbridge is what has the controller for stuff like pci bus/ide/usb etc
and then you have the northbridge connected to the southbrigde by traces on the motherboard so they can communicate

The chipset is actually made up of the northbridge and southbridge. The northbridge connects the cpu, ram, and agp video. The southbridge controls pci, ide, usb, isa if you have it, I believe power management (not sure), and also has temperature and voltage monitoring. The two are connceted over the PCI bus, except for Intel's "hub architecture" and Via's V-link. Hope this helps...
