what the difference between

one has a + between "dvd' and "rw", while the other has a minus. I'm holding out for DVDxRW personally, because it's got precedance over the other two

Different formats. I got a + burner when they came out. Happy I did. The +Rs are much cheaper. Now all the burners will burn either format so it doesn't really matter. Just buy whatever is cheapest.
 
im just wondering what the - means and waht the + means..my uncle is here and i dont know the4 answer to his question
 
+ usually means a + (as in PLUS), while a - usually means a - (as in MINUS).

Now, disregarding the theory of parallel universes affecting our own dimension of living, PLUS usually means a good thing, while MINUS a negative. So, assuming everything else in the equation is equal, the DVD+RW will burn DVDs successfully while DVD-RW has a 20/80 chance of succeeding... 🙁 Poor thing...

+Rs play in all my DVD players no problem. It's pretty much a non-issue if your DVD player is less than a few years old.
 
so basicly one just plays in certain dvd player and one does the others? or does it have to do with being rewriteable?

No, most DVD players will read both formats fine. Some of the older ones have trouble reading burned DVDs. Some people have had better luck getting their old dvd player to read one format over the other. It completely depends on the player.

edit: if you are talking specifically about RWs, most DVD players won't play either.
 
My roommate, who does a lot of burning says + is a lot better for DVD players and movies while - is better for archives and data backup. I dunno for sure either way tho.

But the player sucks balls.
 
- is the "standard", + is the most prevalent (thanks to Dell's pumping out millions of units with + only burners).

These days, the difference is null. All reasonably recent (post-2000) DVD players should read both fine. All reasonably recent DVD burners burn both (Unless you're buying a Dell, I think they still only ship +)

It has to with how the data written to the disc is formatted. Such as error correction. I don't know the details but there was a page describing this.
From what I could understand the +R(W) format is more 'advanced' than -R(W).

Just get a writer that support both formats. For data storage the DVD-RAM is superior since it supports random access.
