what the diference between PIO and DMA

yesterday i upgrade my via driver. and i found my mboard detect my harddisk as PIO. Before that my harddsik detected as LBA. i'm confuse about this. can anyone tell what is PIO.
 
this might help a little bit

make sure you go into device manager and under your IDE controllers choose "dma if available"
