what tests to run on a hard drive

I have a seagate 320gb sata series 10 hard drive. I have been experiencing a lot of system lock ups and application crashes and im worried the hard drive may be at fault. Are there any tests that i can run to ensure that the hd is not damaged?

Seagate SeaTools would be the first one to try. Maxtor's PowerMax is also quite good, but SeaTools can even be run from a web browser. These utilities can scan every sector of the drive to be sure that they can all be read properly. If you can make a backup image, an even more thorough test reads AND writes to every sector but will overwrite your data.

If you have application crashes, check the event log in Windows (presuming you use it) to see what it might show.

You could also have a driver issue. Or memory issue.
