Around what range of temps would be normal for a 2600XP+ at 333FSB (made to run that way)? How high would start to be considered dangerous?

thats totally dependant on case temps, heatsink, thermal compound, and die. i wouldn't worry about CPU temps til it starts hitting 70C on a normal basis. it can probably handle a good 85C+, but if it starting to hit 70C i don't care for the risk or possibility of it being able to get higher to the damaging area. i like to leave 20C buffer incase something goes wrong.

I really don't start to worry until temps reach 60C. As AWWB mentioned, the chips are good for 80C or so, but 60C is my personal preference.

See... that's the problem. I'm using this speeze cooler that seems to be aluminum with a copper insert and a very slim fan (I haven't been able to find the model number online). It came with the processor and I remember that it was designed for this speed. I am also putting it in a VERY VERY compact ANTEC ARIA case (cube).

It was going up to 78-80 under normal load and without the top and ride side of the case (the processor is RIGHT BEHIND the ride side of the case, so it is now open to air) it is running nearly 70C. I'm thinking these numbers cannot be right. I'm going to see if I can fit my larger heatsink in there (I forget what kind, but its huuuuge and has an 80mm fan on it) and see what kind of numbers I get.

I just cannot see it being right when pulling nearly 70C completely open to air.

Oh yeah, I'm using Arctic Silver II also.

Try some different thermal compound, that AS is probably separated and you're down to the liquidy part, not the conductive silver.

bartons really run quite cool, TBs even cooler. i use an old Volcano 6 for my barton at 2.1ghz and its about 47C max,and thats only with one crappy 80mm rear fan for the case. 70C seems very high.

could be either or, the difference isn't very big so it doesn't really matter. eitherway, thats way too hot for stock speeds, it is however still perfectly safe.

Methinks you have the heatsink on backwards. The screwdriver slot should be facing the power supply, when it's installed.

There's no way its on backwards, it has even been reinstalled since this all started. I ordered another heatsink/fan combo today and will report how that goes.

Methinks at this point that the board is reporting temps way off. But when my newegg RMA board gets back in I'll compare temps I suppose.
