my opty 170, doesn't like going over 2.5ghz. right now running at 300fsbx8.5. I had it boot to windows at over 2.8ghz, but cannot get it orthos stable without giving it more voltage then I would want to run. (ran it up to 1.5volts. but the v-drop was massive, ~ 1.46 actual according to mobo-monitor.) and temps were getting to the 60'C. Which is werid because its orthos stable at 2.5ghz at stock voltage. maybe i'm doign something wrong.

but anyways. I'm going to do some massive video encoding for a while, and less gaming so its time to move to intel.

The mobo I finally settled on is that, Asus 650i Plus board. (I want the 6 sata ports).

in july/aug, I'm going to get the q6600 when it drops in price, but for now I want to start migrating.
----

so the question is:
What current core 2 duo Cpu should I get to = my opty at 2.5 ghz?

---

also would, windows vista have a problem going from a dual core to a quad core cpu? would I have to re-install windows again?

Well if you plan to oc the c2d then get the cheapest one and crank her up. At stock speed my e6400 was faster than my opty 175@ 2.5 so when I cranked her up to 2.7 well what can I say. This thing flies in vista ultimate. All of my cpu scores are up. What more could you ask for? If you plan to oc make sure you get a good hsf right off the bat before you mount the mb.

my 9500 zalmen is being moved over to the new build, given that c2d runs cooler, I see no problems with it. Just have to make sure I have the right mount for it.

Yes it should do you just fine. I'm running my e6400@2.7 right now with the vcore at 1.35v. I'm happy right here and don't plan on trying to go up anymore just yet.

Looks like you got unlucky with that Opt170. My 170 does 2.9GHz on stock Vcore (1.35V), but needs 1.40Vcore to hit 3.0GHz. S&M + Orthos stable, any faster and S&M shows L1 cache errors. All with AMD standard heatpipe cooler.

Agree with previous posters that any C2D, using your Zalman to OC, should match the Opteron at gaming, and give you that extra in encoding you're looking for. E6320 @2.8GHz (7x400) should be pretty easy, or a cheaper E4xxx for heavy overclocking until you go for the Quad.

went with the cheapest e4300 from newegg.

hopefully get lucky and get a good o.c. from it. I figured i'd save the 30-40 bucks for now, and use it for the new cpu later.

as for the opty. it could be me. I only spent less then an hour on the oc. it might be able to do more. esspically if I can figure out all the settings in the dfi expert. Honestly for me, the board gives too many opitions to make it stable.

for all I know my memory timings might be whats holding the cpu back (being that the controller is on the chip).

and the one area I spent hours on was researching memory timings. I have never seen a mobo with so many different opitions for memory, and I hand picked just about every single one to get a 1t timing at ~260fsb. I bet if i loosen that up to 2t the cpu might be do more.

Good move. It could be some time before the price of Quads drops sufficiently to match the Duos.

Very likely memory-related. Although I've got good Crucial DDR500 (PC4000), I underclocked the memory speed (DDR333, 2T) to find the CPU limit before pushing the memory settings back up (fortunately for me it does DDR533, 1T @2.8V).

i might try that. dont know why i didn't think of cutting the memory speed then testing for cpu, and then getting a balance. thanks for the reminder

even though I bet its the 1t timing, I should force it to 2t just to see what happens. The motherboard likes setting it to 1t in auto mode.

as for the quads, I here around july 22nd or so, the q6600 will be under 300 bucks. thats when i'm going to make my move
