One thing I like about nerdom is that unlike some other groups we aren't as quick to buy based on a brand. We do our research, we compare specs, and we go with what is at least an educated decision.

With that said, sometimes even techies can become irrational fans of a brand as any Virtual Boy owner can tell you.

What tech brands, if any, are you irrationally tied to?

For me the clear winner is Nvidia, I won't even consider AMD GPUs even if they are twice as fast for the money. Oh and I love Seagate, even if WD probably makes a better product nowadays.

How about you?

I am rational in all my tech fandom. It's those NV guys who are mindless rabid fans.

Probably ATI for video cards, Samsung for monitors, and G.Skill for Ram.

None really. All my choices are rational, and are based on features, or past experience.

Way back when I used to build only AMD CPU systems but thats because I was/am poor and AMD usually offers better bang for the buck lol.

None that I can think of. I think for me it comes down to I've just never had a real issue with any particular product. I've owned many different brands of many different things and they all functioned as expected.

I do my research, and as long as the product meets my requirements, and doesn't have any glaring bad reviews, or known issues, I will buy even the cheapest brand to save some money and it has yet to bite me in the butt (knocks on titanium). If I have had good luck with a particular brand I will always look to them first when making the new purchase, but it still doesn't mean that is who I will go with.

I will (ir)rationally never buy Apple.

U.S. Robotics modems.

Linksys routers (although it's definitely changing, their smart wifi interface is absolutely horrendous, I will avoid it whenever possible). Although I say this now having an ASUS router at the home and don't see me replacing it.

Probably Google and Nintendo. So much of what I use everyday are Google products and services. And I still have a soft spot for Nintendo. I want to buy Wii U just for Nintendo games even though I know the system is a failure. I still have my Virtual Boy. It was a steal at $35 clearance.

I don't have any allegiance to a specific brand. Except I will not buy Apple. I've also been buying intel cpu's and nvidia video cards for the last couple of builds

Seagate hard drives over western digital. I got Raptors back in the day and they had this incessant whine sound which then made me realize all my WD drives had some kind of weird clicking or whine sound. Seagate drives are almost always quieter which I value over performance anyday. Turns out they load smoother from a user perspective IMO irregardless of the benchmarks. Maybe its because I can't hear the WD drive groaning to load.

Starting up windows here we go brlgrlglrlglrlg blrgrlglrglrlglrgl blrglrlglrlglrlglrgl there ya go.

I wouldn't say my preference for NVIDIA is "irrational." I have been burned time and time again by AMD software support.

Nvidia is the only name in discrete graphics.
WD is the only name in mechanical hard drives.
Corsair is the only name in cases.
Seasonic is the only name in power supplies.
Intel is the only name in processors and chipsets.
Asus is the only name in motherboards.
Corsair is the only name in memory.
Samsung is the only name in SSD's.
HP is the only name in printers.
Yamaha is the only name in receivers.
Sony is the only name in earbuds.
Logitech is the only name in mice.

How many of these manufacturers actually make best-in-class products? Most of them, but they are not without tough competition. Yet when I'm interested in something, I look at them first, and sometimes only.

Not irrational tied, just old and jaded enough not to want to eff with success.

My go to brands:
PSU/Case = Antec or Enermax
Mobo = Gigabyte
RAM = Ripjaws
HDD = Western Digital
Sound = Creative
CPU = Intel
GPU = Nvidia or AMD (not much choice)

Camera = Canon
TV/Monitor = Samsung
Mouse/KB = Logitech

I pick Nvidia for better Linux driver support, but it is irrational because some of that advantage has eroded. I just don't want to relearn stuff, vdpau works so well.

Windows for OS. Though I've started playing with OS X and Linux, if only for the fact that I have to support OS X for our designers and no else has learned about them.

AMD is always an issue. They've had problems since the early 2000s when I got back into computers, and it hasn't changed. Nvidia has better overall performance and compatibility across product lines. You have to be careful with AMD. Intel is the best choice for open source graphics, but the performance doesn't match the best of the big two.

OK...you might have got me there. I won't use any other mouse (since they got rid of the old red ball one). My problem though is there is no real alternative, and these m570's the L/R buttons die quickly. Unlike my old red ball ones that are still going strong.
