It has to support UMA, not all Wifi phones do.
In fact I think very few will do it nowadays. You'll probably do better with Skype or something.
All the phones that show up when you click "wifi calling" support UMA. I think every android phone does. Last time I checked every blackberry does.
I know for a fact that Wifi calling via UMA is built into the framework on the HTC Ones S, I'm 90% certain it is for the Galaxy S3. I know the Sensation was able to use it, I know the Amaze could also. The Nexus One as well.
Gee thats funny, cuz last time I checked, NOT every Android does.
exhibit II 4g works with it. uses minutes though
Which modern Android phones do not support wifi calls? To my knowledge, if it can run Google Voice and has WiFi, it can make wifi calls.
tmo's UMA calling is identical quality to a gsm call. using a SIP client over HSPA+ sucks in comparison.
I wouldn't say it's that good. I regularly used T-Mobile WiFi calling with my Vibrant when I was with T-Mobile because I couldn't get a cell signal in the basement. Callers on the other line routinely complained of echoes and reverb. Many times I heard my own echoes too. I never got that using regular cell call.
wait a second, i have an htc one s with t-mobile. does that mean i can get wifi calling? is it free?
If you're on T-Mobile there should be WiFi calling app already installed on your phone. It's free but it does use your plan minutes.
ok so i can enable it in settings but since it uses plan minutes then i only gain the presumably better reception, correct?
thats the idea. thats why everyone is itching to use sip calling through wifi, because that is totally free if you use google voice with it.
and over wifi, if setup right, it can be much better quality then cell calls... getting it setup right can be tricky though, thats why i myself have been trying to setup my own asterisk server because that should help quite a bit.
the other option is to pay for a sip service, which can be cheap too... $100 a year or so... but because its me and i have the chance to do it for free i am exploring that avenue to the fullest extent
as i posted earlier, tmobile wifi calling is FREE and DOES NOT USE PLAN MINUTES if you call them up and ask them to add the free wifi calling to your line. This must be done per line, if you're on a family plan.
Gee thats funny, cuz last time I checked, NOT every Android does.
One of us is actually checking and the other is just using it as an expression.
