assuming i have the money (and job 🙂 for a majopr upgrade from my current XP1900+ system....

I am looking forward to Prescott and/or AMD64...i'd like to hear what some people's opinions are...

I still don't see the point in an AMD64 cpu neither do i see the point in a 64bit windows version....

Say...some 6 or more months from now...what kind of system would you build ?

greets

prescott for highest performance

athlon 64 for a good price/performance ratio

if it was me, ill get athlon

Congecture at this point. I'm a price😛erformance type of enthusiast, and I'm sure most others are as well. We'll have to wait to see some reviews, and all users will evaluate what they want at that time.

Agreed. Since neither are out, it's hard-to-impossible to judge what performance and price are going to be like.

I've been going thru the same sort of thinking as you have.

It's my understanding that the 64-bit aspect will only garner a few percentage points gain for most applications. The big performance boost is that the innards of the chip do more things faster.

Also, I have heard that AMD's design particularly lends itself to higher future perfomances without very much effort. Putting it another way, it is not an old design that the engineers are futlilely beating on to squeeze out a few more MHz.

As your replies already indicate, it will all come out when the world gets its hands on them and has a chance to test them.

Maybe some more storage space for my server. Perhaps some newer and/or faster hard drive for my main rig. I see no use for an Athlon 64 on the desktop at this time. I refuse to buy Intel, mainly since I can't afford it and AMD has served me well for years. I don't see much that I do being difficult for my current system. MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR nForce2 motherboard, Barton 2800+. I am fine for at least a year, going by previous times between upgrades (The Barton was an upgrade to a 10 month old 1700+)

I dunno what you're smoking, but plenty 875's and 865's do.

Aren't the first Prescott's supposed to have a higher pin count or something? Call me crazy, but that sounds like a case of a round peg not fitting in a square hole.

Initial batches are confirmed to be Socket 478.
