My use of the internet is pretty much:
-gmail
-google voice
-skype
-youtube
-reddit
-wikipedia
-engadget/lifehacker/anandtech

On occasion I'll use:
-pandora

I don't have:
-facebook
-twitter
-4square
-whatsapp

Am I becoming old and obsolete? What things should I be using and why?

I think twitter is the black belt of the internet. The ratio of garbage to good stuff is almost unfathomable, but the good stuff is really, really good. I have a twitter account but gave up trying filter out all the shit. But those that can get their twitter account to just show them interesting/cool stuff have a leg up.

well the fact that you're not using yahoo is good.
Also reddit is a youngster thing.

twitter is useless unless you're into following celebrities' commentary, any really meaningful tweets will get reposted around the internet or on news sites.
whatsapp is just free texting and phone, you lose only your money, or other people's money.
4square: never used that.
Facebook: kinda keeps you in the loop with what's happening in your city or to your circle of acquaintances.

You aren't getting old. Its just that times are changing fast.

I did have facebook, but it just seemed a way to have 400+ friends you don't actually talk to in any meaningful way, it seems like a colossal time waster. Twitter to me seems even more pointless. 4square is a little too big brothery to me. Whatsapp is mostly redundant with google voice sans audio and photos which I don't really send.

Whatsapp is the most advanced chat/sms app out there I'd say. Platform independent and it lets you send audio, video, photos, and whatnot.

Never had a Facebook and never will. Twitter has it's uses. I follow basketball and all basketball news comes out on Twitter first, so I basically just follow sports writers, players, and the odd celebrity for funny one liners (Colbert, Conan, etc.).
