In Virginia its 3.7% of assessed value. Imagine my surprise when I had to pay a annual car tax on a leased vehicle lol.

I would assume most. Not surprised about the leased. Why should it be different? Somebody owns it, so somebody has to pay it. It's either you or the dealer, in which case they'd just raise the payments.

Not sure what it is here in terms of percentage, but it was about $200 for my 97 and 00 maximas, so it's not that much.

Anyone pay yearly registration for their car? What is that if not an annual car tax. (Miri, that includes you and me in Texas.)

Yearly registration is not a annual car tax. In Virginia we have to pay a annual car tax, a annual registration and a annual decal fee.

Tags are $54 bucks every 2 years in Oregon.

edit: no "car tax", or more properly -- vehicle excise tax. Remember that is a deduction if you itemize your federal income tax returns.

Every state pays for registration tags a year I think? Annual registration fees are not the same as a annual car tax.

Sometimes registration tags and the annual vehicle excise tax are collected together. Washington state used to be like that (when I lived there) with an excise tax of roughly 3% per year until the passage of I-695 in 1998 (IIRC) reduced it to a flat $30/yr. tag fee. That tax revolt occurred because WA state bureaucrats insisted on using the KBB retail value of the car to assess the tax instead the last sales price or an actual appraised value. So if you had an old parts car or a junker, you still had to pay as though it were in mint condition. Straw that broke the camel's back there...

CT charges you property tax annually...weeeeee, more money for the government. And thank goodness too, otherwise the roads would never get improved and I'd have to sit in traffic while headed home each evening...oh, wait...

We have an excise tax in MA, but it is of such a trivial amount that officials are considering repealing it, since it costs almost all the tax revenues just to collect the tax.

also, due to the 'no car tax' law, you only have to pay 30% of that this year.

Senator Kohl loves to drive up registration prices. :| I happened to get both of my current cars in May, too, so it's $110 every may. One is an even year car, one a odd year, so I have to go to emissions testing every year, too.
