What Speakers Should I Buy?

I just got a Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook. It has digital output (s/pdif) and I want to take advantage of that. I want to buy a solid set of speakers that have this s/pdif input. I am not sure whether to get 2.1, 4.1 or 5.1, so make your best suggestion. I will be living in a dorm room this fall, so I might have to stick to 2.1 unfortunately, but I guess I could always leave the rear speakers at home. Please help me out, I will really appreciate it as I am having a little trouble understanding this s/pdif business. Thanks in advance!
