What sort of improvement from a 9800 Pro

Recently my R9700 Pro died and yesterday i rang Crucial to organise a RMA. That was all done in about 5 minutes and i was informed i would be getting a R9800 Pro as a replacement as they done make the R9700 Pro anymore. Anyhow this is what i was expecting to happen but my question is, in games like Doom3 and HL2, and older games like UT2004 and Far Cry how much of an improvement will i see FPS wise @ 1024 with med/high settings and low/no FSAA and med AF. Rest of the system follows:

Barton 2500+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (which also is fried atm and needs to be replaced)
1gb DDR 400
Windows 2000
60, 120, 250gb IBM HD's

Not much of a diff at all, maybe an extra 500 points on 3dmark03. Unless, that is you get a R360 core and flash it to XT 😉

You should see 15% improvement across the board.. in 3dmark03 not much as stated, but that's fine cause neither card scores high on 03 anyways (who cares)

Yeh i dont even bother with 3dmark anymore. 15% is pretty nice so thats all good. Extra info: the card is a 128 version. How likely is it that i'll be able to flash it to an XT, and what sort of speed improvements will that give me. Actually what will the flash do, unlock some locked pipelines and make overclocking easier?

I'd say it's more like 10% (at least at stock) between a 9700Pro and 9800Pro.

Flashing a 9800Pro to XT is, IMO, fairly useless unless your card has the thermal probe attached, in which case you get the software temperature monitor. OCing a 9800Pro to XT speeds gives you almost exactly the same performance.

Only if it comes with a 360 core, you can get a slight improvement in fps if you flash. It will not unlock any pipelines or make overclocking any easier. It only uses different shaders and that's what gives you a slight boost.

Edit:
Don't flash if you do not have a 360 core. The only way to find out what core you have is to remove the heat sink.

I'd suggest (before flashing) that you d/l Rage 3D tweak and OC it. My BBA 9800 pro is OC'd slightly higher than an XT and very stable. I.e., NO atifacts in Doom 3.

Hehe cheers for the link. Flashing the 128mb card is indeed pointless. I figured it might, what with the XT having 256mb of ram.

I wouldn't say it's pointless. I got a 5% increase in 3DMark03 score just by flashing my 128MB Pro to an XT.

that was probably due to different mem timings...
you can also use Atitool .22 to alter the mem timings and overclock the card.

no, there is actually a "difference" after the BIOS flash . . . some XT core optimizations are UNlocked.

However, the difference is VERY small and - unless i had a 256MB Radeon Pro (actually i do) - i wouldn't bother with the flash to xt and simply o/c instead . . . . however, that is a very personal choice. 😉

so worth modding...
actually 5% can make the difference in keeping your card a bit longer OR upgrading now. 😛

e.g. Running Doom iii at 9800XT speeds allowed for HiQ whereas 9800pro speeds meant MedQ 😉

If you do your research, a bios flash is NOT dangerous, reversible, simple and FREE.

But then some prople have an irrational fear of o/c'ing.

does that 5% in 3d mark = 5% increase in fps in games

if it does, then its worth it, if not, i don see the point

I can't say if you will experience a 5% increase in fps in all games. That depends on the game and it's graphics engine wouldn't you agree? But of course you will experience an increase in fps in most games since games (like 3DMark03) uses 3D graphics...
