What sort of idiot runs their CPU without a cooler?

Many times .
#'s 1 thru 5 were accidental , just playing around.I popped a couple Athlons just for fun.
# 8 was submerged in Midel 7131...Worked great ( I still use that p3 coppermine in my pf router to this day !!!!)
9 thru 15 were 50/50 in isopropanol submersion.I've had other cpu's naked in about 10 other liquids.

Vintage computing .. is there a survivalist aspect to this? Gate length (according to process tech), faraday cages etc? Is an older node less likely to be affected by an EMP?

No, it is for the "feel" and experience.

In a way, it is valuable, as it keeps a "living" part of history alive for a few more years. Just what it really was like to use such a machine then.

Few years ago just got done hooking a friend up with a sweet new PC, had my powerhouse 4870x2 in it with accelero extreme cooler.... After it was turned on he dropped his bottle of chewing tobacco spit straight on top of the case which had a top mounted 200mm fan, it went all over every single component. I unplugged it and threw it all in the trash.

Probably every CPU with a TDP under 5W. I think most phones and tablets don't have CPU coolers.
