What sort of effect does the mobo have on performance?

I ask because I have a comp with an ECS board and an e2200+x1800xt+2GB RAM and I'm disappointed with performance in something as old as CS:Source (and other source games too). The game becomes choppy even at the lowest settings when there is a lot of activity. Playing with bots has a significant performance impact, making the game unplayable. Disabling on-board audio seems to have improved performance, but the issue with the bots remains. What is strange is that my CPU load does not hit 100%.

I notice that when people refer to this board (or other cheapo boards) they state that it is not good for gaming. Why is that, aside from lack of OC'ing ability?

I doubt there's any defect with the board or computer, as I have another setup using the same board, CPU, RAM, and HDD with the same problem. I find this silly having played this game on an ancient Athlon XP 2800+ and ti4600 with only 512 MB of RAM and no recollection of such problems.

I'd like to get a P35 to finally OC this thing, but being unable to find the cause of the current problem is driving me nuts and I would be quite unhappy to have the same problem after the upgrade.
