I just moved to a new place and suddenly my chair mat sucks on the carpet. It makes dents where the wheels are that are hard to move out of and I naturally end up rolling back into that same position. I checked out the bamboo chair mats but they're a lot of money and I surprisingly read bad reviews about them developing dents as well. It's hard to tell online which "carpet chair mats" will not develop dents.

If you use a chair mat on average pile carpet (i.e. not super thin like in an office), what kind do you have?

maybe glue some pieces of laminate wood flooring under your desk area. would allow you to move around while distributing the weight on the carpet.

Staples had a kind of roll-out wooden chair mat, made of a bunch of small slats of wood/bamboo held together by a fabric backing. It wasn't as cheap as the plastic chair mats, but it also works comes a lot close to working properly on thick carpets. (The wood on the one I got is fairly thin, and so it flexes a bit under the weight, so it still won't present a perfectly flat surface - but your chair also won't be able to sink into the carpet.)

Edit: Ok, I see you mentioned those...yay for effective reading skills.
Yes, there are some low spots in the mat. But, it's still better than going right on the carpet. I guess the other option would be to get a nice big sheet of 3/4" plywood, sand and finish the top, glue a rubber or vinyl sheet to the bottom, and put something around the perimeter to give it an edge. Not exactly an easy option either though. :\

I use a sheet of .093 aluminum which I bought at a metals salvage yard. It is app. 2'x4'
and cost me 12.00 3-4 years ago. It is indestructible.
