What songs or bands would you recommend for impressive bass talent?

Sadly I don't know many excellent bass players, and to me they deserve much more credit than they are attributed. I never hear anyone talking about bass players or anything to do with it, yet it's such a crucial part to songs, and I love the sound of a bass. What songs have excellent bass in it? I don't mean some stupid simple bass line that just pounds a lot ... I mean something that actually sounds impressive/complicated, musically talented..

Anything with Victor Wooten or that Primus guy in it... les claypool i think.... charlie hunter (aka 8-string guitar/bass dude) is great too.

Victor Wooten... a master... truely a master...

Check out any of his songs...
ie: Me and my Bass Guitar, Turbo Jazz

Oh yeah i forgot, Dianogah is a chicago concept band with two bass players and a drum set.... nothing else. they're great. PM me if you can't find an MP3....

Les Claypool is a sloppy bass player live, but he can be quite good. so Primus, Colonel Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade, and Oysterhead are good. As well as Rush, and early Iron Maiden.

Thanks all. Looking for some stuff by Victor Wooten / Primus .. can't find anything by that Dianogah...

Any Primus songs I should look out for?

<< Don't forget Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers >>

Yeah, especially on Blood-Sugar-Sex-Magik (the whole CD). Old Pink Floyd and Yes had the bass mixed way up and sounded great, though I have no idea whether the playing itself was good technically.

Look for Classical Thump too 🙂 The man owns.

Victor Wooten... Yes.

Check out him and his bandmates Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and download "The Sinister Minister" Live from their CD "Live Art"
It is so badass... if you cannot find a copy, drop me a PM and I will hook you up. I am a bass player so I have lots and lots of amazing stuff.

Funny you should say that, I just finished listening to Comfortably Numb, and now I'm listening to Money... damn Pink Floyd rocks. 😀

Interesting side note on Victor Wooten.

I live in Nashville (where he lives) and i purchased an ibanez bass about 2 years ago. It uses EMG pickups, active pickups, which use a 9v battery. Well i never ended up playing it for awhile..since i play guitar and i just purchased the bass for fun 😀

Well a few months ago i decided to clean it up for a friend of mine to jam with (his brother plays drums...so we'd have a nice unit right there). Well we already had a couple drinks in us and i decided to change the battery and i unscrewed the back panel off. Well on the inside of the backplate was the inscription

Peace!
Victor L. Wooten
:"music sign" (his little music sign).

I couldnt for the life of me remember who he was....so we came inside from the garage and the first site (just for kicks) that i tried was www.victorwooten.com. Dead on...it was his signature and everything. Seems he used to own the bass and he traded it in/sold it back to the place he originally purchased it!

We thought that was pretty cool....his signature hidden on the inside.

He's an amazing bassist.

<< Again a recommendation for Victor Wooten. The Flecktones just released a new live CD, check it out.

Wow, whats it called?

Just about anything by Iron Maiden....especially the early stuff...Steve Harris is a damn good bass player.

Wow. I listened to some of that stuff (Victor, Bela), and .... holy ... freaking... crap. :Q

I'd have to agree with everybody above.

For newer music, I was somewhat impressed by the bass work on Incubus' new album. It may not be all that technical, but it fits the musical style perfectly.

Impressive bass talent. A bass player that can read music well is pretty rare. A bass player that can keep time is pretty rare, and a bass player that can play with good time and read music and walk bass lines is even more impressive. I would work on those things.

Did you actually read the post?

Hehe, I knew that would be your response. Have you caught Amazing Grace (Improv) yet?

😀
