What Songs or Artists Will Get You Banned From Napster?

How do I know if I am downloading a song that will get me banned from Napster? Is there a list published somewhere on their site that lists the forbidden artists and songs? I have heard about all the problems that Metallica has caused for Napster so I am assuming that downloading something from them will get you banned. But who else will get you banned? It doesn't seem fair to me that you could be banned for donwloading a song that you were not even aware was one that would get you banned. Where is the list of forbidden artists and songs listed? well, i downloaded some metallica songs, and i can still use napster. i have heard though that Rage songs can get you banned. i myself have never been banned from napster (hehe). as for the list, i haven't come across one, but would be interested in one should there be one

you could download a napster de-ban file. i'm not sure with anandtech's rules, so i won't post a link. if it is legal for me to do so, lemme know (all the de-ban file does is allow you to register a new name)

Well the people who downloaded the songs from Renegades (new Rage album) were banned but I seen on the RATM that it was a mistake of their management and they had a unban file you could download. Then they put up the mp3s to all the songs for download anyway.

I wish Napster would post the list of songs and bands that will get you banned so that it doesn't happen to anybody else. I am sure if people knew they were going to get banned by downloading certain songs then they wouldn't do it.

whatever is popular at the time or whatever people are downloading the most. It all depends on the producers of the artist.

Hmm, I've downloaded Metallica stuff, and Rage stuff, and never gotten banned. *shrug* Though I have the unban I've never had to use it.

I wonder how Napster is going to enforce most of these bans? Do they have people who monitor what you download all the time?

I doubt any software system will be able to filter out such downloads if the MP3 files themselves are smartly-renamed, e.g. Matalika or Roya Gorbison or Mikhail Jackson?

What I want to know is, if a song listed on their site is going to get you banned, then why is it on their site to be downloaded to begin with? Sure does seem to be unfair to the unsuspecting downloader. Do us all a favor Napster and POST the list of Bands and Songs that will get us banned on your home page! The songs shouldn't even be on the site to begin with if it will cause a person to get banned.

ginky4, the songs are on YOUR computer not napsters site.

1. you CANNOT be banned from napster for downloading music, only sharing it.

2. currently, only SHARING metallica and dre material can get you banned. all other offending material is being filtered out, not banned.

3. getting unbanned is easy. do a search, you'll find it. if not, drop me a PM and i'll do the search and return the result to you.

4. banning and filtering is only taking place on napster's OWN servers--ie the servers run by napster, the company. napster server source code is in heavy distribution, and many third party servers are popping up all over the place. download and run napigator to select an alternate server.
