What software to use for small store inventory?

Well, my mom is running a business now, and we'd like to keep track of the inventory in the shop by ways of a computer. Anyways whats the best software for this?

how small is the inventory?

If its really small, Excel can do it.
If its a little bigger, and youw ant something more robust, Access.

Assuming you use MS software.

well, its a specialty food store with thousands and thousands of products from around the world.

Access eh? how much does it retail for?

I would use Microsoft Excel.

If you register a domain (USD $8.88/yr) you could keep your inventory online for free using an eCommerce solution like this.

Does that keep inventory?

Can I have more info on how to set up that?

Also Excel comes with office right?

I think osCommerce handles inventory (there might be a mod or plug-in for this functionality).

Yes, Excel is a part of the Microsoft Office Suite.

I believe quickbooks (a necessary for any small business, IMHO) can handle inventory
Dependent upon the level of accounting already in place at the business (or the lack thereof), this may be the better choice. QuickBooks is a rather straightforward piece of software, designed specifically for small businesses who do not have a great deal of accounting/inventory knowledge.

I wouldn't recommend osCommerce for accounting/inventory related purposes. (We used it once briefly for a test run) Like others have said - QuickBooks is a pretty inexpensive solution good for accounting/inventory. If you want to step up past that, if the business gets large enough - MAS200 is the end game.

Hrm... Now this is sort of an interesting problem. Is it a periodic or perptual inventory system that she is using? Good to know, since each have different needs.

As well as since you say it has thousands and thousands of products, I'm assuming that the purpose of this system is to know when to reorder, right? If so, then Quickenbooks is a bit underpowered for the task at hand (sure it can do it, but it's going to take ungodly amounts of time and expense to set it up and maintain it). I would recommend that she either goes and does research at other small stores that are similar (like talk to the managers and be nice about it) or hire a professional to sit her down and explain the options. Basically she needs a decent pos software and inventory control system (neither of which is going to be cheap).

There are lots of software that can do this.

QuickBooks is very good.

Invoice 2000 is pretty darn good too.
