What software is good for Hardrive data duplication? (copying data from a dying drive to a new RMA'ed drive)

I'll soon be getting a new hardrive in the mail to replace my dying one (Western Digital 80 GB, non-special edition). What would be the best program to use to transfer the data from one drive to another? I'm thinking some sort of program that will fit on a floppy or CD that I can boot that way. I thought about using the MandrakeMove CD based linux distro, but I'm not a linux guru, so I'm not sure how this will go over. Any ideas?

Norton Ghost.

If you dont want to pay for it though you can boot from a floppy to a dos prompt and use diskcopy.

Put old drive in, and new one in at same time.

For example sake drive c is old drive d is new.

Type "Diskcopy c: d:"

If you want for variable commands type "diskcopy /?"

Hope that helps 🙂

Don't new drives usually come with software that will help you do just what you're asking? Like 'maxblast' or whatever WD calls their crap

Yes, you can download software from the WD site that will set up drives and do those trasfers just fine. Best of all the cost is only $0.00...
.bh.

Thanx. I checked it myself a lil while after someone suggested they might have software to do it. I wasn't sure, because when I got the drive, the partition copy feature wasn't part of the program yet.

best way to go..WD..grab WD's latest from their site, Maxtor use Maxtor's, etc. ...Samsung sucks..have to register to get a self-executable(extracts to make a floppy ) that has never really worked for me. 🙁
