What software does Microsoft use to run Hotmail? I am not talking about the front end, but the back end. Do you think it is a customized version of Exchange?

I highly doubt its exchange running hotmail. Come to think of it if I remember correctly the hotmail servers (last I checked) were on Sun Microsystems servers running Solaris. That may have changed but my guess would be that its something in the *nix enviroment that they wrote the code for.

Solaris, IIRC.

Always amused me that MS don't use their own OS for the backend on their busiest site.

Ah, but you see, running a really crappy, shoddily-coded site on a system that won't crash allows them to create much more misery in the world than if they ran it on a system that would be down all the time anyway.

File extensions are SRF and ASPX, so probably files created in Visual Studio.NET served by IIS on Windows.
