so i just got myself a canon s30 (off someone on these forums, thanks bud!). i love the camera itself... however, when i hook it up to the computer, its hell. the software canon gives you makes me feel like they think im totally retarted. so im not going to use most of it. i wanna know what you guys what you use to hook up to the computer.

i have the cable hookup, which is really convenient, however, when you "download it to computer" from the camera using canon software, it leaves a copy on the camera. how stupid is that?! as well it requires the zoombrowser which is totally and utterly useless, and bloated. the one thing i like it though is that it creates folders for you, according to the date the pic was taken on. thats really nice. i have a 6in1 reader which i could use, and is faster than the camera hookup... however, it is more of a pain taking out the cf card all the time. and no convenient auto dated folders. so what to do? are there settings i missed? better programs out there?

to recap, heres what i need/want for my digicam:
1) works with the canon hookup cable. that's convenient.
2) automatically makes dated folders for me when i upload to computer
3) takes the pictures off the camera when it puts it on computer. cut, rather than copy.

i would sacrifice the first... if i could get the last two from my 6in1 reader.... its faster too as a bonus. is there a nice prog that does this?

thanks for any help!

If you're using XP, you can use the scanner and camera wizard. Just uninstall your Canon softwear but leave the camera drivers in. Plug it in, and in my computers there should be an icon for your camera. right click->properties to select options like dated folders and automatic deletion of existing photos.

Yeah, that is what I use, just easier than a couple other programs I have.

I'm on my 5th digital camera - upgraded each time - now have a Canon D60. After the novelty of the first one - I never connect the camera to the computer. Why? I use a media reader/writer, simply move the media from the camera to the computer - copy my pics to the HDD, then burn to CDR. I found that connecting the camera was slow, cumbersome, and a general PITA. The media reader/writer eliminates the need for that completely.

The only prog needed is Windows Explorer and a photo editing program.

really? its so convenient to just plug the thing in. i have a sandisk 6in1... which is faster... but its not worth the time required to pop the cf out of the camera, orient it properly, put it in the reader, take it out, then flip it around to fit in the camera. thats just me though...

OK - we all develop our routines - I simply swap C/F media. When I pull the one out of the camer, I replace it with an empty one. Then the full one goes in the reader/writer. Orientation? Never considered that a problem - label side visible to me in both camera and reader/writer. I can do that swap faster than I can find the Canon cable and connect it - also, I don't have to turn the camera on and waste the battery.

Another vote for the card reader. It is soooo much faster and easier than plugging the camera into the computer. Everyone that uses mine agrees it is a vast improvment.

Oh yeah, not having the crappy camera software on my computer is also infinitely better.

I just use my pcmcia to CF adapter in my laptop. I have some usb type converter for my desktop as well. Very easy to do this, fast, and no extra buggy software required.
