what software do you guys use to edit movie files? ****Help me retain my Rep. as one smart @ss computer dude****

My friend has a digital camera that can take digital video, much like a camcorder, but digital. Now he's asking if I have any recommendations on software he can use to edit the videos (cut, paste sequences and add sound and music).

But this is something I've never ventured into. Could you guys give me some recommendations on programs and whether they're shareware or freeware or either? Thanks everyone!

I need to *seem* smart about computers since I'm the computer dude among my friends :)

adobe premiere? is that the one for editing movies? i know theres one my friend uses made by adobe

I believe he may also be somewhat interested in VirtualDub, which is freeware under the GNU licensing scheme but apparently good stuff. :) I've used Premiere and Videowave myself as well.
