I won't detail my experiences here because I know that some people love the Samsung hub. But that's not an option for whatever reasons.

I'm sure there are other threads like this but I don't come to this part of the forum very often, so just yell at me for being a newb and point me in the right direction.

The one I'm considering is HomeSeer. So any experiences with one of their hubs would be very much appreciated.

I don't know much about HomeSeer, but I know from posts in my various Smart Home Automation groups that people like it quite a bit. There is a relatively new product on the market called Hubitat - everything runs locally and it is more or less (might require a little tweaking) compatible with all of SmartThings' custom code and handlers. I personally have had Wink, SmartThings, and Hubitat. I'd never advise anyone to get Wink in a million years and I'm not yet to the point of migrating everything over to Hubitat from SmartThings because SmartThings does support some cloud integrations (such as Logitech Harmony) which Hubitat doesn't have yet.

Vera is another option but I didn't buy their latest hub because they were having issues (especially with ZigBee support) and other things. It might be better now though.
