groberts101 we've had this conversation before, but what about the OCZ Petrol for the OP's new needs? I know you don't like the type of NAND it uses, but the controller is good, the price is good, and the performance is pretty good.

Probably go for a 128gb Crucial M4 (nothing huge, i know :(), or if the 160gb Intel 320s go on sale i'll get one of those! :awe: Only reason i dont want to is because it'll add years of life onto my laptop (for my needs), and i kinda want a new laptop heh.

320 is probably better for your laptop b/c it's larger, cheaper, and you probably don't have Sara 6 gb/s connections on it, anyway.

I'd personally say a 60/64 as many others have.
But would your mother have other files on the computer, such as a lot of music and high-quality photos? If so, I'd get a 120/128 just to be safe.

that's what HDD is best used for though. Storage.

Especially if you want to help assure you can KEEP that data for longer periods of time. Having storage AND an OS on the same drive is just asking for trouble and is always best to keep them seperate.

Yep, thats what I was thinking too, but they havent gone on sale since they did a while ago!

Never thought about the stability implications of separating the drives...i guess less could go wrong if they're separated.

Oops, forgot that they went back up. Keep your eyes on those, for $1/gb like the were for around nov 20-jan 5 or so, it's gard to beat that deal. The 300 gb drives never went on sale, unfortunately.

I was sooo close to pulling the trigger on a 160 gb one when it went for like $165 or so, I should have done it. I was more thinking that I'd just wait until I got a new laptop, but her laptop failing forced my hand.

1222 would be the next logical series up from the 1200/1500.. but the flaws with these controllers are still present regardless of mfgr date or supplier. Firmware updates have taken us far from the initial release problems.. but many power transition issues remain. Ultimately causing panic-locked drives that need to be RMA'd.

I have 6 in R0 for nearly 2 years now.. BUT I never sleep/hibernate them aside from short term testing new beta firmware revisions for the mfgr. I would never recommend sleeping these drives to anyone using them.. past or present models included. The newest 2xxx series controllers don't panic lock like the first gens did/do and is much safer to power transistion the drives as a result.
Sleeping ssd's are bad or just sf ssd's?
I sleep my m4 all the time. No problems yet.

I keep everything on the SSDs; OS, apps, and data. I paid good money for them, why would I continue limiting myself to HDD speeds when accessing data?

I only use external drives for backup, meaning duplicating the data on the SSDs.

I sleep my SF drives as well. Instant on from sleep mode is still faster than 4 second boots :awe:

My laptop has issues where it randomly hangs for a good 15-30 seconds at a black screen when resuming from sleep, but it did this both with the original HDD and vendor installed OS as well as the SF SSD and clean MS OEM OS install. No doubt it's a problem with the laptop itself or a driver. Oh well, doesn't happen very often.

I would never recommend a first gen SF controlled drive to anyone looking to purchase a drive in the current SSD market regardless of price.

Well?.. maybe to a few guys that I don't particularly like. lol

I have a couple sitting around in a drawer somewhere, just can't think of anyone I dislike like that badly to give them to though.

It's all down to what software you install, so in your mums case 60GB will be just fine.

Just checked mine and I'm at 67GB and that’s with Users directory on D:\ drive. AppData from Users alone would add another 9GB.

...

Speaking of users directory, I found that iPhone backup is in AppData and it takes a lot of spaces! Everytime there is a major OS upgrade, iTune backups iPhone in a different file..

At one point, I have over 25GB iPhone backup on my 120GB SSD!

I have the OCZ Agility 3 120gb. I have no idea how you guys manage with that much space. After installing Win 7 Ultimate, Adobe Suite, Office 2007, along with the required apps (winzip, google earth, picasa, etc), I'm left with about 40gb. I throw in my MP3s which is about 11gb, and I'm left with so little space left! If I work on a few hi-res multiple layered photoshop images, my space will go SO fast, this is not including Movies!

Sigh, I need a 256gb one.

was mainly speaking in regards to first gen SF.

BUT.. when you introduce more variables, such as power transitions and ram flushes, into the mix?.. even on controllers/configs that are known to not have issue?.. you can potentially introduce greater likelihood that something could eventually occur. Never underestimate Windows ability to fudge up the bitmap and create mapping inconsistencies from the SSD controllers side of the equation during those processes as well.

After all.. it's still Windows we're talking about here. lol

many do it quite easily with typical tweaks of pagefile, sys restore, and the hiberfile being resized or disabled. Sometimes people just assume that Windows is smarter than it actually is. Of course those of us who leverage 3rd party utilities in place of those built in utilities would disagree somewhat.

Wicked, my mom told me she'd buy my hard drive from me and i could just get an SSD. Looks like the capacity just went up. :awe:
I'd have a hard time just explaining to my mom what an SSD is. Let alone convincing her to buy me one.

Buy another 120 and RAID 0 them. Cheaper than a 256:)

Just tell her HDD vs SSD is the same thing as using cassette tapes vs an iPod on random shuffle.

64GB is all you need.

I am able to install all my Apps/Programs and Windows stuff on one, except Steam/Origin/GFWL
