I am a brand new member of the Anandtech forum, so I don't know if this kind of question has been answered here ad nauseum...

I'm going to be building my first PC shortly and I wanted to know if the following configuration is too much for a 350W power supply (the one that comes with the Antec SLK3700-BQE case):

ABIT AI7 MOBO (865PE)
2.8GHZ Northwood Pentium 4
1 GByte RAM
ATI 9800 PRO Video Card
DVD-R/W drive
DVD-ROM drive
2 60GB SATA drives (RAID 1)
Card Reader (in one of the 3.5" slots)

I've been told that this particular Antec PSU is underrated, but I don't want to count on it.
In any event, if 350W is insufficient, what would you recommend?

This type of question gets asked at least a few times a week (sometimes a day). An Antec 350-380W PSU would be fine for that system. If you have the spare cabbage, get either the 430W or 480W True Power PSU and you won't need to worry about it. It will also give you room to grow with, if you care about such things.

I'd recommend getting a combo drive over just a dvd-rom drive.

BTW, I'm running more on my system with only a 400W PSU, to give you an idea.

More would be better, I agree that a 430w or 480w would give you that extra power if/when you start adding things.

BTW....welcome to the forums.

There is a really slick questionnaire page you can just fill out and then scroll to the bottom to see a total. Add some "room to grow" on the order of a 20 to 25% margin, and you'll be set. Go here:

There are some errors in that, namely in the video section 9500 and 9600 don't consume the same amount, also the 800XT consumes slightly less the then 9800XT so 90 watts is way off.

Given the potential usefulness of such a fill in the blanks chart, I now will have to presume that you have eMailed JC with the corrections so he will be able to make the chart more accurate? You wouldn't just tell everyone here without also advising the source webmaster about his problem, would you?
