There are many academic software sites out there, just Google it.
Journeyed.com is where I recommend many of the college students to get their software. Sometimes Journyed has rebates and that can pay for one's shipping.

look at your bookstore first.. your school may already have some deals going on with some companies. my schools got somethin with microsoft (which i'm sure they got with practically every university) for office and windows.. office 2k3 pro costs $80 and xp costs $83. everything else is dependent on whether the company offers student licensing or not - photoshop cs2 still costs $300 but matlab costs $100 for the student license compared to $1900 for a commercial license.

also look into what u can download from your school.. at my school they got sas for everyone, matlab for engineering/math/physics students, mcad for mech e, autocad for civil, and paper for ee/ce.
