Don't turn off your paging file because some programs require you have a paging file even if you 48gigs of ram. It is weird but true. I would set my paging file to a size dependent upon what I am doing on my computer. If you are doing video editing or some other massive hardrive and program usage I would make it bigger. If you are using MS Word I would make it much smaller. No less than 300-400megs I would say. I would also make the mininum paging file and the maximum paging file the same number so the paging file does become fragmented thus degrading performance even more if you happen to end up using it.
For general use, I set mine to 500 fixed because I have run into a couple of shoddy apps that crapped out if they detected less then 400 or so, regardless of RAM capacity.
