what should i use with ffdshow?

I got ffdshow, and I'm totally lost and can't figure out how to make it work (by work i mean postprocssing dvds i play). I don't know hardly anything about playing video on my pc, and the stuff i find by searching assumes way too much prior knowledge (and is inconsistent, makes no sense at times, etc.). Main thing I need to know is what free dvd software player will work well with ffdshow--i could not get powerdvd to work, maybe it does.

also, if anyone can link to a post or site somewhere with really basic info on ffdshow and video playback that's be real helpful. Maybe ffdshow has a manual or something but the only help files i could find were crap, but thats ok it is free.
