I am thinking of an upgrade, as you do!
My current system is an Athlon 949 4400 X2 with 1 gig of OCZ memory 2*70MB Raptors in a mirror and 5*300MB Maxtors in a raid 6 array on a 3ware card + a 250GB Seagate for additonal backup of very important files. Graphics is an Nvidia Quadro 3500 and its all powered by an Enermax Noise-Taker 650Watt PSU.
The machine is the server for my home network as well as my workstation and runs Server 2003 normally although I am using XP Pro at the moment for reasons I won't go into.
I feel like an upgrade is due!
I will be replacing the motherboard, processor and memory, everything else is OK for my use. I was thinking of a dual Xeon 771 board such as a Tyan Tempest with the 5000X chipset or the Supermicro equivalent, I don't need SLi. However I have found it almost impossible to find coolers for the chips other than the OEM ones and the memory gets a bit expensive for 16MB of buffered ECC.
Should I wait a couple of weeks and see what AMD produce with the Barclelona?
Anyway I am looking to build a dual processor PC with 2 Quad cores, plenty of memory (and an OS that can use it), what do you think I should get my hands on? As you will have gathered I have a good budget but don't have pockets that reach to my turn-ups.
All suggestions will be greatfully recieved
