Depends how long ago he bought the 7900gt. The step up has to be within 3months. When did you get the 7900gt OP? I would say step up to a 7900gtx. It stinks that you can't get a GTO, but the 8800gts is $500, so you're paying a lot out of pocket. something like $250.

go for the 7950gt

That's foolish, the frame increase is 1-3fps.
The increase for the 7900gt ----> 7900gtx is 12-15 depending on the res

There is no reason for you to step up to anything right now. The step-up is really only useful in a few situations, (7800GT owners when the 7900GT was released is a good example) but yours is definitely not one of them.

Just save the money you'd spend on the upgrade and put it towards your next gen VC purchase.

I vmodded my 7900 GT to 1.5 V. It has a vf-900, and max temp is ~57-60. It runs at 675 / 840, even with only the vcore mod. I haven't even tested memory past those speeds yet. I highly recommend the mod.

I'm in a similar position, my step up runs out in a couple of days. I am thinking if I ever want to run at higher resolutions (I want to buy a 24 inch...eventually) I might need 512 MB of RAM. But... I guess I should just wait, and ebay the card. A 7950GT, 7900GTO or GTX probably wont be enough anyways.
