I'm thinking of looking around for a college kid to render my house in Sketchup. I live right near a bunch of differrnt campuses, so talent should be easy to find. What's a reasonable amout to offer for this?

I'm basically looking to have every visible part of the house measured and modeled. It's an old Victorian, so there's lots of bigass molding, cornerless rooms, and uniquely shaped windows. I want this done so I can easily play arond with potential renovation ideas.

I started doing it myself a while ago, but it's just sooooo tedious.

Any suggestions as to what would be a good way to bid this out? Price it by the hour? Total job? How much...?

A draft should run a decent amount in the professional world. I'd wager you can seal the deal with any college kid for $50-200ish, though the more you pay the likely he'll do a better job. I know I wouldn't bother doing a good job with a $50 offer, if I took it.

He could do the job in revit or convert to sketchup, too. You might want to consider Revit since it's more of a standard in the BIM industry than Sketchup is.

Ah, sweet, I was thinking it'd be more than that. How long do you think it'd take someone to do? I assume all the measurements wold be the most time-consuming part.

I'll try offering $200 and see if anyone bites.

Measuring every small thing, including moldings, and putting it in Sketchup sounds like it will take a LOT of time. No way would I do that for just $200.

You really need to offer $500 or more. Converting a house into Sketchup or AutoCAD could truthfully take a few days worth of work.

Time depends on how much detail you want.

I read it as he was just asking for a barebones home sketch accurate to the dimensions, including windows, doors, and such. Not every detail. Those can be done pretty quick, give a person skilled with BIM a day or two worth of work and they're done.

Personally I would have assumed you gave him the measurements of the rooms in the home though. That's not hard to do with some measuring tape, rough drawing of your house with a dimension to each wall section. Give them a guided tour or photos. Not very many college kids I could think of would go around doing the measuring, unless yeah you fronted up more.
