Hi, my apologies I'm new at this, here's some system specs:

CPU: q6600 2.4GHz
GPU: 8800GTX
RAM: 8GB ddr3 1333 PC310666
MOBO: ASUS P5E3 Deluxe
PSU: 750W 12V

I was told that the q6600 could easily OC to 3.2-3.4GHz, and that some have even got it to go up to 3.6GHz, I want to get a good boost but I also want to be safe as well, to a point where it makes a difference but doesn't shorten the life of the CPU.

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place,

Thanks for the help.

you'll need aftermarket cooling to run at 3.2-3.4. an ac freezer pro 7 is typically under $25 and should work for that mild of an oc. to get to 3.6 a tuniq will do. to get up to 3.7-3.8 you need either a lapped tuniq, true, or noctua, preferably in a push/pull config if possible. also, to go over 3.4 you'll want good case airflow. read graysky's core 2 overclocking guide at the top of this forum for ideas, then report back to us with details/questions.

Welcome to the Anandtech Forums :)

EDIT: how are you going to get the fsb up with that memory?

EDIT2: is that a 9 multi on that Q6600? Good luck overclocking that 1333

since you're asking what you should overclock your q6600 to, i assume you already know how to OC.

i'd say go for an overclock that will give u load temps around 70C max *under OCCT 2h CPU or p95 24 hours Small FFT*

+1

Although, OCCT reads the same temperature as Core Temp which TJMax is 105oC. I set 95oC as my TJMax in Core Temp for my Q9450, so I assume whatever temp OCCT is showing, I subtract it by 10.

q6600 is different from 45nm quads. I assume tjmax is 95c for all of my cpus, though again that assumption is meaningless because delta to tjmax is all that matters. keep your cpu at 20-30c delta to tjmax and you'll have no worries.
